What To Eat After An Abortion For Faster Recovery

A woman needs to eat properly after an abortion for faster recovery. Certain foods can help relieve pain and discomfort, while others can boost your immune system.

When most people think about what to eat after an abortion, they likely consider clichés like “eating a light meal” or “avoiding heavy foods.” However, there are specific post-abortion diet tips that can help you recover faster. In this blog post, we’ll discuss what to eat after an abortion and provide some helpful tips. But first thing first, let’s talk about what foods you should avoid after an abortion.

What Not To Eat After An Abortion

  • Fried and greasy foods should be avoided; although greasy foods like fries don’t necessarily cause more pain than other types of food, they’re harder to digest, and sitting in your gastrointestinal tract can increase your discomfort.

  • You should also avoid eating certain foods that could cause more pain. For example, spicy food can stimulate your digestive system and increase gas, bloating, or cramping. The same goes for dairy products like milk and cheese—although they contain calcium, which is great for building bone strength after an abortion, they can also irritate your digestive system.
  • It’s also best to avoid caffeine for at least two weeks post-abortion. Caffeine accelerates the production of acid in your stomach which can hamper nutrient absorption  and slow down digestion , resulting in gas and bloating (not to mention it’s dehydrating too). But if you really need your daily dose of caffeine, at least make sure you eat something with it to balance out its laxative effects .

  • Avoid taking painkillers before eating because doing so may delay the time it takes food to move through your digestive tract. If you’re suffering from severe pain, then certain pain killers might be best. However, if you don’t have any issues with pain level, consider avoiding medications altogether.

What To Eat After An Abortion

Since your digestive system is already compromised after an abortion, it’s best to eat foods that are easily digestible and contain little fat and fiber (which can be hard for your stomach to break down).

Here Are Some Tips:

  • Consume lots of fluids. Drinking fluids will ensure that food moves smoothly through your gastrointestinal tract without any obstruction, so drink at least eight glasses of water per day. Try ginger tea or soda. Not only can ginger help aid digestion, but it’s also a natural anti-inflammatory that will make your cramping and bloating feel less painful.
When you're having tummy troubles, ginger ale is the best option.

  • Eat lean meats and vegetables. Lean meat like chicken breast has little fat and won’t put strain on your gastrointestinal tract the way beef would. Broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, and Brussels sprouts are all great options for vegetables because they’re low in fiber and contain lots of necessary vitamins and nutrients.
White-meat chicken and turkey, particularly the breast, are rich in protein and low in fat.

  • Eat Salmon/Tuna – Salmon is typically sold in cans but you could also try tuna or even sardines if you prefer. Try eating one 6 oz. can twice daily for Omega-3 fatty acids and protein.
  • Eat pasta, bread, or soup. These types of food are light on the stomach and easy to digest.
  • Boiled potatoes – Without skin they’re just as healthy as the ones with skin! Eat one or two cups twice per day as an easy way to get essential nutrients such as Vitamin C and potassium into your body.
  • Banana smoothie/milkshake – Blend one banana with a cup of your favorite type of non-dairy milk (i.e. soy, rice, almond). Not only will this be a great source of potassium and magnesium, which is important for healthy blood clotting, but it also tastes delicious as well.

  • Flavored ice pops (without added sugar) – These can be great treats to help make your mouth feel clean while recovering from surgery. Flavors like orange, grape and cola are all safe bets since they contain natural ingredients rather than processed sugars that will only worsen nausea.
